I borrowed several compilations of the early Popeye comics from the public library. I also read some of the early Popeye comics, including his first appearance, on Hoopla, which is a book-reading app that you can get with your library membership. The early Popeye comics are fun to read. One of my favorite characters is Castor Oyl, who, unfortunately, stopped being a regular character sometime in the early thirties.

Unchecked fandom is fanaticism that distorts history. As a comics collector since the early eighties me and fellow collector loved Ditko as a creator and collected all his comics but we fcuking hated his art. He was a legend but among folks like Adam's and Steranko all the way up to Jim Lee or Todd McFarlain he was never ranked among the best artists. So by all means go on stage and says he was an amazing creator and legend, but from the time you say you love his art we know you're a fraud 😂

The irony as what Steve Ditko believed in went against what Marvel (Disney) is pushing out. Ditko would dismantle Marvel for not having his objectivist ideology incorporated

😎👍 EC , always an interesting period in comics history Alex. I've always looked at it as the company that almost changed the cultural consciousness. True , every company was imitating their horror material but eventually " horror fatigue" would have set in and they would have been scrutinized by their imitators for something fresh to be imitated. What was possibly going to be copied was their social innovation of racial identity ; as had appeared in their shock suspense and war titles and in their now classic sci-fi story Judgement Day. I'm still of the opinion that the horror books were an undeniable factor in the controversy but not the real main concern that racial inclusion was , unacknowledged but evident as we shall see. The parents and other adult campaigners of today's MAGA followers could not allow this to happen so the campaign to " clean up" comic books ensued and if one gives close attention to characters of the now code established period it will be quite noticeable that minority characters , when they did get the opportunity to appear , were comfortably established as either foreigners , despite the reality of diversity in society , or throwbacks to acceptable imagery. EC however was not alone in racial inclusion ; Harvey introduced Tiny, a non stereotypical African-American in 1953 as a close companion to Little Audrey and Melvin , who not only appeared on covers but shared interior stories with them as well as having his own back up feature. EC would have gone from being known as Entertaining Comics to Encouraging Competitors.

Top of the heap - 1930s and 1940s - a pulp starring The Spider, which publisher Stan Lee handed off to Steve Ditko, who made Spider-Man out of it all.

Like many of my generation, i didnt have the New Gods on my radar reading wise untill AFTER the 1st Star Wars trilogy was seen. But once I did start reading it I found my self smirking and sighing , smirking and sighing. Immediately suspicious. It Does not sit well. Lucas should have been a bit more vocal about this. I dont want to be negative or a bummer but I find this a disturbing (ahem) coincidence.
